MAEVE

The two hybrids and our group need to talk. A debrief can’t wait, whether this pisses off Andrei or not. I’m concerned after last night, not for myself but for his confusion and uncertainty about his future. We need to find out what Gabriella did to him—and discover what this ‘First’ is.

Meeting in the kitchen would be cramped, and the lounge not much better. There’s also volatile tension and suspicion running through, which makes the open space in the garden the logical place. Somebody scuffed the blood runes away, returning the place to a human holiday home with the patio and garden furniture. A long wooden table with benches running the length of either side is positioned close to single-cushioned chairs that face out onto the neat lawns.

But there’s nothing human about anybody here.

I’m intrigued by Eloise and Dorian, although intimidated too. The power that emanates from them isn’t only Dorian’s physical status as a hybrid, but something strange about Eloise too. I thought she was a witch, but she’s closer to Dorian’s energy. Did something happen when they shared blood? Because as witch and vampire, that inevitably happened. Although tall with slender arms and legs, the attractive girl with her cascading brown hair holds more power than we could imagine.

I’ve heard a lot about Dorian over the months, but never knew he had a child, and that’s a secret I wish I didn’t know. I’m definitely not telling anybody; the last thing I need is to make an enemy of this pair.

They’re our hope at taking down Gabriella.

Dorian stands, hands in pockets, beside where Eloise sits in a cushioned chair. I sit at the table beside a subdued Jamie with Lex on my other side. Tobias stands too, resting against the table. I made a pot of coffee which I set on the table with mugs, but only Lex and Jamie bother pouring one.

“I apologise for not introducing myself last night,” says Eloise. “I was distracted by my anger at him.” She pokes Dorian with a toe. “We have a deal he broke. Dorian doesn’t leave and attempt to take on Gabriella, or anybody powerful, alone.”

“I wasn’t alone, sweetest girl,” he replies.

“That’s not what I meant.” She sighs. “I’m not arguing again. I want you to leave with me and join the others.”

The glower that crosses Dorian’s face suggests that’s not what he wants. He looks to us. “I don’t like talking instead of action. Get on with your chat.”

Jamie recounts events at the Tepes house, skimming over the attack and allowing Dorian to interrupt at that point to tell everybody of his heroics. I barely hear much of Jamie’s explanation, still unable to process the assault. I glance at Tobias; I have a request for him later.

“Did Andrei explain any more about what happened to him?” asks Lex. “He was a mess when I found him and didn’t know whose blood he took.”

“Maeve?” asks Tobias. “He came to you last night. How did he behave? Differently?”

I blink at him.
